Environmental Services
Crow wing county Environmental services provides information and services to protect the air, food, and water we depend on, ensuring access to a safe and healthy environment where everyone may thrive.
Mold, Radon, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
Indoor air quality is a major contributor to the health of Minnesotans; Due to our relatively extreme climate we spend a lot of time indoors with the windows closed, and many of us lack adequate ventilation. Daily exposure to harmful gases and mold spores may exacerbate preexisting conditions and can lead to respiratory problems like lung cancer or allergic reactions.
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, and 2 out of 5 homes in Minnesota are above the recommended limit. Do the test yourself or call an Indoor Air Specialist 651-201-4601.
Heat Index and Air Quality Monitoring
Staying informed about heat levels and air quality is crucial for health, especially during extreme weather conditions. The NWS HeatRisk Dashboard provides localized heat forecasts and safety recommendations. Additionally, AirNow.gov offers real-time air quality information, helping residents take necessary precautions during poor air quality days.
Free Fire Alarm Installation & Escape Planning
Fire safety is paramount in every household. Local fire departments or community organizations often provide free smoke alarm installations and assist families in developing escape plans. Crow Wing County partners with the Red Cross to provide this free service which aims to enhance home safety and preparedness in case of emergencies.
Well-Water Testing
It is common for Minnesotans to receive their drinking water from a private well, but many don’t know the risks associated with contaminated wells. Accredited laboratories, such as the Minnesota Department of Health's certified labs, offer testing services for contaminants like bacteria and nitrates. Regular testing helps to maintain safe drinking water, learn more.
Restaurants & Hotels Complaints
For concerns related to food safety, pool sanitation, or lodging conditions in Minnesota establishments, you may file a complaint with the MN Dept. of Health. It is important to report suspected water and food-related illness or safety concerns to prevent dangerous outbreaks of disease. Remember to stay out of the water if you are sick.

Foodborne Illness Reporting
If you suspect that you or someone you know has contracted a foodborne illness, it's crucial to report it promptly. You can call the Minnesota Department of Health at 877-366-3455 to report symptoms and receive guidance on necessary steps. Timely reporting helps prevent further spread and assists health officials in identifying potential outbreaks.
Ticks and Mosquitos
When a bug or insect can transmit disease to humans we call them vectors. Ticks, Fleas, and Mosquitoes are common vectors in central Minnesota and can transmit a wide variety of diseases. Wearing Insect Repellent and avoiding tall grass and piles of brush are a great way to prevent exposure to ticks. Mosquitoes prefer standing water to lay their eggs; getting rid of old tires and positioning buckets, pails, or containers so they do not collect rainwater can help to reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home.
Zoonotic Diseases (Rabies & Avian Influenza)
Rabies is a very serious illness that is fatal if the patient does not receive timely prophylaxis. If you believe you may have been bitten or came in contact with a rabid animal do not wait for help, seek medical attention or call 651-201-5414 for guidance. Rabies only infects mammals and is typically transmitted through saliva when an infected animal bites another animal or human. In Minnesota the most common sources of rabies are skunks and bats. Skunks are the leading cause of rabies in domestic animals and livestock, which may also transmit the disease.
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A (H5N1) is a rare disease in humans but may have serious consequences. This virus circulates in wild bird populations and may spread rapidly on domestic poultry and dairy farms but is not known to spread from person to person. It is important to practice good hygiene and wash your hands after touching an animal in any setting. For information related to current outbreaks, testing, and prevention visit the MDH website.
