Solo Doctor's Visit

Change up your checkup.

It’s ok if your parent waits outside.

You’re probably used to going to checkups with your mom or dad. But as you get older, you’ll start seeing your doctor one-on-one—without your parents—for a few minutes during each appointment. This gives you and your doctor a chance to get to know each other and to team up to reach your health goals.

When do I start seeing my doctor alone?

You’ll start seeing your doctor alone for just a few minutes when you turn 11. The length of that one-on-one time will get longer as you get older.

Why is it important to talk to my doctor?

Your doctor will help you learn how to take charge of your health. This means listening to your health needs and concerns and working together to reach your health goals.

What should I talk about at my checkup?

Anything! Your doctor will ask you how things are going at school and at home, and if you have any health concerns. You can ask questions about your body, your mental health, your relationships with your friends and family, bullying, sex, even drugs.

Will my doctor tell my parents?

Some of your care can stay between you and your doctor. You can get services and test results related to sexual health and drug use without permission from your parents. Your doctor will only share this type of information with your parents if you ask them to, or if they have concerns about your health and safety.
